The Flossmoor Police Department was recently alerted to a phone call scam in the community. The caller manipulated the caller ID to make it appear that the call was coming from the Flossmoor Police Department and was using scare tactics to influence the resident. Please be on alert for fake calls that appear to be from the Flossmoor Police Department or another trusted agency. The caller may claim that you owe fines, missed jury duty, or have an outstanding warrant, and may try to pressure you to make a payment via gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency or to share your personal information.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
- The Flossmoor Police Department does not request payment over the phone.
- Caller ID can be manipulated — even if it shows a legitimate number or name, it may not be real.
- Threats of immediate arrest for payment refusal or requesting your Social Security number or bank information are major red flags.
PRECAUTIONS YOU SHOULD TAKE
- Hang up immediately if a caller demands payment or your personal information.
- Do not press buttons or respond to prompts during suspicious calls.
- Verify the call by contacting the Flossmoor Police Department directly at its non-emergency number: 708-957-4500, ext. 2.
- Never give out Social Security numbers, banking details or passwords.
- Block the number after the call (although be aware that scammers often change numbers).
- Report the incident to the Flossmoor Police Department so patterns can be tracked.
